Very often the issues of actors being paid more than the actresses have resurfaced, making us rethink about the term ‘gender equality’. Apart from the monetary issues, if you’ve noticed that the movies rarely do have anything significant to do for the actresses. The female leads of the movies are only shown up as the paper dolls dressed in colours with little or no say in the movie. You can pick up the movies randomly and most of the movies have a too trivial role to play for the actress. But there are certain treasurable actresses in our B-Town who defied all these notions and chose to be the ‘actors’ instead. Scroll down the page and get to know them all:
1. Richa Chadda
We start picturizing her role in Masaan as Devi Pathak, whenever we think about her. Apart from Masaan this talented actress cast her spell in Gangs Of Wasseypur for which she’s awarded Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Her character in Fukrey, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ramleela, and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye was also praised by the audience but ironically the actress didn’t reach the pinnacle like Katrina Kaif or Priyanka Chopra.
2. Radhika Apte
The list stands incomplete if we omit the name of this Dusky Beauty. She has acted in many Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telegu and Malayalam movies but made her debut in the Bollywood with Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi. Her short movie Ahalya directed by Sujoy Ghosh brought all the glories to her name, for her sultry role as Ahalya. She has made her remarkable presence with awesome Bollywood flicks like Badlapur, Hunterrr and Manjhi – The Mountain Man. Still she has not bagged that huge brand value, and it leaves us in wonder why!
3. Nandita Das
She’s an exemplary actor cum director who has done over 30 feature films in over 10 different languages. Her experiments with the bold roles in movies like Fire, Earth, Bawandar and Before The Rains, gained her respect and recognition from the critics and audience both. But ironically there is no stardom for people with substance in Bollywood.
4. Seema Biswas
Must you be remembering the Bandit Queen? Isn’t it? There was none other than Seema Biswas who could have played the role of Phoolan Devi as fiercely and boldly as she did. This actress deserves numerous standing ovations and a lot more stardom than she has today.
5. Swara Bhaskar
Her recent movie Nil Battey Sannata has brought her accolades from the most renowned critics. Although she was warned against doing the movie as it could have otherwise effected on her career. But valiant and experimental as she is, she did what she believed in and was able to turn many heads around. Despite being such a great actress, she never bothered about playing the lead.
6. Tisca Chopra
This Indian stage and film actress took her first step into Bollywood with the movie Platform starrer Ajay Devgan. And since then, she never looked back. She went on doing off-beat roles in movies like Firaaq, Taare Zameen Par, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji and 10 ml Love. She never cared about the lead roles, but she always established her prominence with her presence on the screen.
7. Nimrat Kaur
The Lunchbox have been one of those movies which came out to be unexpectedly great. She also played the wife of Akshay Kumar in the movie Airlift, which was the only mainstream movie she acted in. She caught the eye of many people in her first music video Tera Mera Pyaar from Sony Music. Apart from this, she has modelled for more than 80 commercial advertisements including Cadbury (this being my favourite)
8. Kalki Koechlin
This actress is giving us some serious ground-breaking movies and short films. People have still been praising her video clip The Printing Machine, when she’s out with another of her work, Waiting, in which she will be seen starring the veteran actor, Naseeruddin Shah. This actress is bold enough to break the stereotypes which have engulfed the Indian women and present these sensitive issues with much ease. We desperately want this actress in the superstar legacy.
9. Lisa Ray
Do you remember Water? Yes, the one which got premiered at the reputed Toronto International Film Festival in 2005. She is also known for the bold characters she played in movies like I Can’t Think Straight and The World Unseen. This actress is the real warrior. She fearlessly defeated the life-taking disease Multiple Myeloma. She also started writing a blog named The Yellow Diaries, which narrates her ill-fated journey through cancer. We are looking forward to her upcoming biographical Veerappan, directed by Ram Gopal Verma.
10. Konkona Sen Sharma
This dusky beauty has never failed to surprise us with her performances in movies like Wake Up Sid, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Omkara, Laga Chunari Mein Daag and much more. But why Konkona Sen Sharma remains unrecognised still remains a mystery for us.
We wish that these actresses continue to play the actor for the years to come and surprise us with their stupendofantabulously awesome performances!
